Announcing the second 3 Inch Canvas exhibition!

The 3 Inch Canvas goes Live Herring '11

When you organize an exhibition and call it “The first” – as we did with the first 3 Inch Canvas exhibition last summer - you do two things. First of all, you declare that there exists a clear ambition that the first exhibition is not going to be the last. Secondly, you take a risk as there is no way to tell whether the first exhibition is going to be enough of a success to call for a second one.

Today we are proud to announce that the risk we took with first exhibition has paid off and we can today announce the second one!

The 3 Inch Canvas goes Jyväskylä in the early spring of 2011

The second 3 Inch Canvas Exhibition for Art on Mobiles will be held in Jyväskylä, Finland as part of the Live Herring ’11 event. For one week, the 3 Inch Canvas will feature at the Jyväskylä Art Museum, one of the main venues of the Live Herring ’11 event.

At the same time, it is my pleasure to introduce to you Sanna Sarva, a Finnish artist and curator who will be handling the artistic aspects of the exhibition. Welcome Sanna.

And You (yes, You!) are invited!

Together with the announcement we open up a call for participation: You are most welcome to join as an exhibitor.

We have implemented a couple of changes to the exhibition since last tine. The most important change is that the exhibition this time has a theme:

Words become images

Let me explain the theme. It starts with words: poems, (very) short stories, aphorisms, fairy tales, you name it. Texts to be read, to be read out loud, texts to be interpreted and texts to be performed. Enter mobile devices and the possibilities of the digital format: Now the words can also be visualized, interpreted, represented, complemented. Works where the words and the images together are the experience.

Finally everything will be packed into a high-tech mobile device. A device that is equally well suited for very personal and intimate enjoyment of the work as it is suitable for sharing the work with the flick of a wrist.

Programmers also welcome

The exhibition will consist of two parts. The first part follows the 3 Inch Canvas tradition of featuring art on mobile devices. The second part is an experiment. An experiment to find ways in which the exhibition audience themselves could create art and then share it, both inside the exhibition as well as outside with friends and relatives who could not make it to the exhibition.

If you are a programmer/artist or artist/programmer or a team of artists and programmers, this is your chance to test out new, interesting ways to create artistic interactivity. What’s that? Don’t know, you show us!
